You can use "tube preamp" model in the Axe and just leave all the preamp controls at default. This is a neutral preamp-tonally and gain wise, along with a power amp sim that you can tweak to your hearts desire-change tubes, sag, negative feedback, etc. It works great with the modular system.

I've been a modular user since Bruce rolled these out back in 03. Having owned multiple heads of both Randall and Egnater as well as the RT2/50, I can tell you in the RT, tube type does make a bigger difference. In contrast, tube type changes in my Mod 100 or Mod 50 make very little difference...

Try a JAN 5751 in the upper tube location in the preamp. This Will tame down the front end gain stage feeding the modules. All the modular gear's first gain stage is in the amp or preamp (not the module) so this tube has a strong influence on overall gain, tone and feel of the modules.
