I've had the KT-88s in my RM50 combo for a couple of months now and I love them. I've had them biased to 52, and the amp sounds much bigger and broad shouldered than it did with either 6l6 or el34s. I also assume that since the manual says it will handle 6550s, it should be OK with the 88s.

Try the mod described on the grailtones site:
http://www.grailtone.com/guitar-tone-ar ... tions.html
It made a significant difference in the gain of my top-boost; it's now pretty clean with gain settings up to about 10 or 11 o'clock.

I just traded a Deluxe for a Blackface. The Deluxe didn't have enough clean headroom for me, and the Blackface does a really good clean Twin that sounds really big and has some good crunch at higher gain settings.

I biased them at 43 initially, but I was hearing some crossover distortion, so I turned them up to 54 and they sound great.

I just put the EH KT-88's in last night, and I'm really impressed. The amp sounds much more 3 dimensional, BIG and FAT with very thumping and tight bass, but not at all dark or muddy.

I just ordered a set of EH KT88's. I'll report back on how they sound.
The EL34's weren't so much bassy as dark and sort of 1 dimensional compared to the sound of the 6L6's in this amp, or EL34's in other amps.

Mullard EL-34's too dark in RM50

I recently swapped out the stock 6L6's in my rm50 for a set of mullard re-issue EL34's and found it to sound much darker than my other EL34 amps regardless of which module and eq settings I used. I varied the bias from 35-45, but not much difference. Does anyone have recommendations for other tubes ...

I guess the only reason I was concerned was because I saw the older version RM50 (silver grill cloth, no reverb) for sale on closeout at a couple of online retailers for considerably less than the new ones. The store that I bought mine from is very reputable, and gave me a great price on the new one...

The store did assure me that I have the latest model. Do they just call it the 50B but not put it on the nameplate?

That's what I thought until I noticed the # on the front panel just says RM50 without the B.

rm50 vs rm50b

I just bought a new rm50 yesterday, and wasn't aware that there is a newer model with the rm50b designation. Can anyone tell me the differences if any? Judging from what info I've found on this forum, I think I have one of the more recent ones since it has reverb and a black grill cloth. The reverb ...

Hi Ned, great forum.

Ned, are you also the moderator of the Tokai forum? I'm a regular there, and I'm sure I will be here also. I just bought my RM-50 yesterday, and found this forum a few days ago while searching the web for Randall info.
