I use an RM-100 with a Boss ES-8, standard midi cable. Works sweet.

Not sure why it would sound garbage, if the preamps are based on the same circuits. Pedals in front of my MTS mods sound perfectly fine.

I much prefer running things like the musket and rat into my Randall Clean. It seems to work better for pedals for me than my other clean (Blackface).

8 currently, with the Randall Clean (seems like a good base for pedals, the Blackface in that position wasn't great), JJ Dirt and Dreadplate in my RM100 for the last little while.

I've run direct into the ReCabinet VST before, and it's fine. Works fine with the free cab emu VSTs as well like LePou.

And.... all I need to do is turn down the volumes on each module and turn up the master and all is good.

Not ideal, but certainly workable.
