In my experience, changing your speakers generally has a more pronounced effect on your tone than changing your power tubes does...(assuming you don't have dead tubes, of course).

If possible, audition whatever amps you are interested in through the same speaker cabinet.

Well, no one answered this when I first posted it six months ago....however, since we have quite a few new members here now, I thought I'd ask one more time.

I like my Plexi better with the .001u cap mod...I appear to be in the minority, though, as most folks are happy with it stock.

Generally, I think all the Randall modules have too much low end stock...haven't heard the Egnaters.

To me, the Ultra Lead is a very warm, smooth, midrange heavy lead tone. Think Mesa Mark series amps and Carlos Santana lead tones...that's what I get out of it anyway.

It is not an extension of the Ultra module.

So, do you create the patches on the xpression? Do the FX (delays, reverb, etc) spill over to next patch? quote] Yes, I have programmed a bunch of presets on the Xpression...and of course I have programmed my RM4 to change channels accordingly as well. If you've been using stomp boxes all this time,...

Thanks Beagle! Sounds like that's a good option. I've been looking at controllers - maybe the Behringer FC 1010 to control it all? I use a Behringer FCB1010 to change presets on my Roctron Xpression and RM4. Works fine once you get the Xpression and preamp set to the same MIDI channel. The real adv...

If you're just using time based effects (chorus, reverb, delay, etc), the parallel loop should work fine and will theoretically result in the least degradation to your amp's true tone and punch. If you also want to use EQ & noise reduction, however, you will have to run everything through the serial...

Cheap effects solution for your scenario: Rocktron Xpression, $300 new....chorus/phaser/delay/etc....parametric EQ and HUSH noise reduction, too. Put it between the preamp & power amp, and ditch the pedals that are causing the problem. As transparent a solution as you will find without spending a wh...

Changing preamp tubes in modules

For those of you who have done it:

Do you know the function of each of the two tubes in the modules?

Does changing one of them (the left one vs right one) have a more pronounced effect than changing the other?

Any specific tube recommendations?

Thanks.

Well, in theory they ought to be pretty much the same...but then the tubes in your RM4 chasis come into play... The RM4 has 3 preamp tubes. The bottom one is the input stage that feeds all the modules. Top right is for the effects send, preout and return mixer. Top left is for the post loop outs. If...

OK, no first hand experience here...but I've been told that many of the Engls are very impressive sounding when played by themselves, but don't really cut through a band mix all that well. I was also told the exception to this is the Blackmore, so I assume it has more prominent mids that the Powerba...

I'd recommend you just get a MIDI floorboard rather than the 4 button switch....will be SOOOO much better if you decide to use the RM4 with a multi-effects unit or other rack gear.
