I am planning on modding my SL+ and Blackface modules soon. Alright, to the point. On the SL+, I'm going to do a C3 cap change to a .001u, and I'm going to do the JCM 800 tone stack mod which requires the R31 to be changed to a 33K resistor and C14 to a 470pf (500V min). I also need to change the Blackface 470 to 150 ohm 1/2w resistor. I'm also looking to change the Blackface LED to green and the SL+ led to blue.

I have no knowledge of soldering or soldering parts, and I am getting a friend to do this job for me. I am looking for direct links to the parts that I need to order to do these mods.

Also, since I'm super cautious about things like this, here are pictures of my modules. I want to make sure the things I have circled are what I need to change.

Links and advice would be much appreciated.

Somebody please help me out with this.

I found a post from over a year ago where a guy modded his SL+ with parts from mojomusicalsupply.com

What are you worried about? It looks like you can read the circuit board :D

It's probably just my inner worry wart coming out when messing with mods. Somebody mind checking these parts for me to see if they are correct?

LED's:

I'd probably just go to my local Radioshack and ask the person working there.. 3mm LED Superbrights is what I think I'm looking for.

If you're doing the JCM800 mod, I recommend using a slightly higher value for C3. There are a lot more mids with this mod and you'll probably want the option of a little more low end, as well.

So, basically, I should definitely try to .0022u before the .001u. I am also using a Les Paul and keep the bass at around 9 o'clock or lower anyways. Is mouser a better place to get products than Mojo Musical Supply? Mouser is super hard to search for me.

If you have a .0047 at C3 now and keep your bass at 9 o'clock, I would use the .0022. This should be able to give/take enough bass, as well as, tighten up for your setting.

Mouser can be overwhelming because they don't have pictures on their website and their catalog is the size of the yellow pages book. The only thing I haven't gotten from them are LEDs, I've gone elsewhere for them, and not Radio Shack because their selection is extremely limited.

The resistors can be swapped for metal film from Radio Shack. This is basically what I used.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much Sacred. I finally modded my SL+ and Blackface, and I am very happy with the results.

The only problem I had was trying to change out the LED in the SL+. I put it in with the flat side facing the same way as my old LED, and the connection proved to be fine and the it turned on with the multimeter. When I put it in the amp, however, the LED would fail to turn on. I turned the LED around to see if it would work, and I got nothing in the amp again but the multimeter showed positive. I could not figure out what was wrong, so I just put in the old LED, and it works fine. I probably won't mess with those again anytime soon.

Anyways, I was no longer chasing a metal tone with the SL+ as I recently bought an Ultra XL that does the job quite well. Therefore, I decided to mod the SL+ to JCM800 specs and change the C3 cap to .0022 to tighten it up. It sounds like the perfect classic rock tone to me, which is great. Now I'm inspired to learn some older music so that I can enjoy my newly modded SL+. The Blackface may have gotten a little cleaner, but honestly, there's not much of a difference that I can tell so far. I've only modded the modules a few hours ago though, and I'm really more of a distortion guy so I don't play my Blackface all that often.

Anyways, to sum it up, the JCM800 and C3 cap change to my SL+ made it have that awesome classic Marshall tone - much better than silverface stock.
