Yet another newb...looking some specific tube info

Post by Human333 » Thu Nov 13, 2008 12:55 pm

Hey all, I just got a RM100P with Blackface, Plexi and Tread Plate modules and have a KH3 and Ultra XL on the way. I most recently have been a VHT D120H user and still love their stuff but wanted to have more fun tweaking on tubes and preamps so this seems like the perfect place to be :D

My most recent musical project has been the band ONLY HUMAN www.myspace.com/onlyhuman

Questions I have for the community are;
Does anyone have any suggestions for the mA range for KT88's and KT66's as I have a box of new JJ's on the way and I'm curious about trying out some different combos.

What are the average prices to have modules modded around here? and who are the best people to talk to about getting mods done?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer!

Welcome aboard!

The 2 main pro level modders out here seem to be Pete (okstrat on these boards) and Dave Friedman. I went with Pete on all my mods and have been thrilled.

Basic mods start around $99 for each guy, though it can add up to double that if you get the extra options...3way bass cap, extra switches, faceplates, etc.

good luck!

Right on thanks for the reply! Do these guys have a website with any general price breakdowns?

I have KT88s and KT66s.

For the longest time i had the 88s outside and 66s inside, well I decided to change that up abit, So 66s are on the outside and the 88s are in now and let me just say WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!

I bias the 66s like a 6L6, 28-35 mine are at or near 34.
The 88s are a hot burner so 48-52 is a good range mine are at 49 or so.

Hope this helps Youll love this combo.

Peace

The Hunter.

Tung Sols are so great for high gain! I also Like EI's in some things but they can be bright. JJ's are decent but only in certain things to my hearing. Can't go wrong with the Sols. You geet deepness and sparkle with warmth and beauty. Kind of like an intelligent super model :)

Right on! Thanks so much for the website link and tube bias recommendations!! This place rocks!

Hey Hunter what brand of KT's are you using in your head? I have some Sovtek made EH KT88's, JJ KT88's, JJ KT66's, JJ KT77's, JJ E34L's and some Tung sol EL34's. I haven't used the JJ KT88's yet but hear they don't compare to the Sovteks and Gold Lion's.

Human333,

Im using the JJ KT88s and KT66s, Gold Lions I have never tried, and the sovteks seem to me to lack the richness the JJs offer cant really explain it but I think the JJ KT88 is much better choice, never tried a Sovtek KT66.

I got my tubes in last night and tried the KT66's on the outside and the KT88's on the inside to start and I'm liking it alot already...just need to go jam and get to test it with the band to really get the full effect.

I still feel there is much to be gained (pun intended) by exploring better modules as my stock plexi and blackface sound pretty damn good but the Treadplate is lacking some edge. I think I will be picking up the KH3 and the Ultra XL modules this weekend :D Thanks again for the help!

Can you only mix type of tubes in the RM100 by running pairs on the inside and out side or is there other acceptable combinations?

Even tho not on my RM100, I've tried KT88s on a Boogie Stiletto Ace. It gave the amp more bottom end but it took away the aggressiveness of the EL34L that I had before. Both sets were JJs. I currently have all EL34s on my RM100 and love it. It makes my Friedman modded Mr. Scary sound like and old school modded Marshall.

Alex
Thanks,

Alex
