So read alot on here about everyone looking for that "brown sound" and why not its an awesome tone... I know that EVH is the one who started that, coining the term and especially on the 1st few VH albums but I wanted to point out some other great tones that I would call "Brown Sounds" that aren't from Eddie

keep in mind youtube usually does a number on the quality of sound so if you have these CD's (and most of us should) I'd recommend checking out the tones on there but here you'll get the idea

Ratt's
Lay it Down to me is one of the all time best rock guitar sounds ever!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=6rqA55ynPoU

also you're in love by Ratt same great tone - by the way dig on Ronald Regan in the move clip!

Dokken's Burning Like a Flame
also...

This last one may seem like a strange example but if you really listen the "Brown" is definately there, but at the same time it's a kind of example of how that tone could be used in a heavier context. also this is one of my all time fave guitar solos its a band called Savatage and the song is call "Edge of Thorns"

by the way I know for sure that Chris from Savatage used Laney AOR heads and Ratt used them live, there is some debate weather or not they were used in the studio though... what you guys think of these examples though?

definately great songs, man.i'd say they're more of the classic British-flavored "crunch" than "brown" sound.when i think of the term "brown" sound,i immediately think of VH "Fair Warning" album.nothing is "browner" than that.VH II is about there,as well...btw,the late Criss Oliva, from Savatage, was a killer, totally under-rated guitar God.he's one of my top five all-time favorite guitarists.the "Edge of Thorns" release is an awesome metal tone!!!

here is another great tone... not brown but its awesome
Handfull of Rain by Savatage, this was after Chris died and Alex Scholnick filled in for this CD, he said he tried to nail Chris' tone he even used Cheirs' Charvels loaded with Bartolini's and Laney amps... not the sam tone but **** good!

just cut and paste the link for some reason it wonk link it

ok so I wanted to share these 2 tones too... they're not "Brown Sound's" either but the tone on the song "Pig Walk" HAS to be the most brutal tone I have ever heard from a Marshall... in case you dont know them Stuck Mojo was a band out of Atlanta that was doing rap/metal before it got popular... Rich the guitarist went on to do a band called Sick Speed and Fozzy (with wrestler Chris Jericho)

the 1st clip is a song called Pig Walk... and the tone is so SUPER brutal the second is a song called Rising...the tone is better on that song(less brutal) i think though at the time I didn't like it as much

I hope you enjoy...by the way any ideas on what Randall mods will get tones of any of the things i've posted?

well,as far as the bands in your first post,i'd go with a SL+ or MR SCARY module.for the Stuck mojo stuff,i'm thinking a 1086 or maybe a GRAIL/RECTO module with an O/D pedal in front of it...should get ya there!

Those are some of the best recorded tones right there. Warren is spectacular on Lay it Down and ofcoarse George Lynch is all about tone.
Warren used a Soldano SLO on those recordings along with his old Plexi.

Some of my personal fav GL tones are here...

Heard a lot of the other stuff (naturally) but this was just WOW!*

I am a massive fan of Steve Stevens...even his flamenco stuff is killer. I can't wait to hear the next thing he does.
Say, should HE have a designer module??????????????????

I mean Metallica is good, but so is Mr Stevens.

RATT really knew how to rock the Pirate look. hahahaha

The Stuck Mojo song sounds like Ministry meets Sevendust.

I give you King's X:

Ty Tabor, now a Randall MTS user. :) The sound he used back then was a crazy jumble of a solid state practice amp as preamp into a Marshall with a franken super Strat guitar. Come to think of it, that's not unlike what EVH was up to at the time.

Ok you may laugh but I want to add a new tone to the ultimate tones list... Listen to Poison Open Up and Say Ahh, specifically "Fallen Angel" that is a great tone, thick, throaty, tons of mids!

Awesome!! was that the neck pickup. . where did you have your density set at?

Yes, that was the neck pick-up. And make sure you crank up the density!

edit:

Hey, check out my next post with the Montrose/Sammy Hagar clips. Perhaps Montrose layed the foundation for what became the Brown sound. If you are not familiar with the history behind the Montrose debut, check it out. It's food for thought.

The father of the Brown Sound: Ronnie Montrose (perhaps).

I believe that the ?precursor? to the classic American/Californian (albeit British influenced) Brown Sound was the Montrose debut, produced by none other then Ted Templeton and engineered by Donn Landee, who also produced/engineered the early Van Halen albums. The Montrose debut came out in 1973 and is often cited as the first ?modern? American rock album (as least that's what it says in the CD liner notes!). Montrose provided a template and a sound that heavily influenced the California rock scene in the 1970's, which later gave rise to the bands that admired, covered and emulated Montrose, to include VH. According to Wiki, ?Van Halen (which Hagar would eventually join) had used this album as a blueprint for their own debut and some of the similarities in sound are striking. Eddie Van Halen considered Ronnie Montrose to be an influence.? It makes perfect sense then, when Roth left the band, that Sammy Hagar would come into the fold of Van Halen.

Looked for a good clip of Rock Candy?could not find one but check out?

As far as MTS modules go, I have a Pete modded Brown module that sounds great, but the module that I have that is by far the brownest is the Brahma (w/ Pete tweaks) lightly pushed by an Xotic BB pedal. No clip handy at the moment, I?ll try and post one sometime.
