The Randall SL+ is a good module and has more gain than a Marshall JCM -800. It's easy to start covering the same ground with Marshall based mods. I would suggest something in the Doug Aldrich vein. (Camerica ?)
Stocks Vs. Mods.
I often do not hear a huge difference between stocks and mods -...
The Scott Ian 1987 module is supposed to be his old Marshall JCM 800 being pushed by a boost pedal. I believe Dave Friedman designed the module. Mine does not sound like two separate entities, nor can I tell what kind of boost Scott wanted to emulate. Nice mid-gain Marshally mod though.
I am curious about the speakers you guys are using to evaluate the youtube videos in question. Are you using audiophile speakers? I use Boston acoustic computer speakers , and thought the Tonehunter stuff sounded fine.
SG mk22 - This one is tuned just right for classic Marshall tone. If I could have only have one mod - this would be it.
Jf 59RR custom - Lot of tones from this one - The hot rod JCM mode moves me.
Grail - Metallica Black Album in a box. nuff said
NEVER OWNED A SALVATION MOD! It hurts to say...
Kemper looks to be a good thing for producers and touring bands. I guess they save space and money. Can't comment on how they sound;because, I have never heard one. I love the raw organic sounds of my modules, and am not ready to jump on that bandwagon yet. Call me a sceptic.
I have a bunch of vintage tubes ( RCA, Sylvania, Amperex) that I mix and match in my modules. But at the end of the day - I like JJ,s. They always work for me. No complaints about Sovtek either. Modern tubes for modern circuits?
Dave Friedman designed The 1987 for Scott Ian of Anthrax. It's a good sounding - but not so flexible JCM 800 module. Very medium gain! I think you will be happy with a Judge and 1987 as long as you really love Marshall Amps.
Wow! Was waiting for the typical cookie monster vocals on the Coheed and Cambria clip. Mashall + , 59RR, SG MK22 ............. too many good Marshall Mods to pick from.
Need to listen to more Mastadon! Does your Mr Scary not get you there?
Don't forget the stockers
Mr Scary - Modded Marshall/Soldano
Grail - Mesa Recto
SL+ - Modded Marshall/ JCM 800
Good bang for the buck with these three modules. :)
