SL+ - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498433
KH2 - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498428
Plexi - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498416
modPlexi - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498424
Ultra - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498411
XTC - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7498399

All mods are stock, only modplexi is okstrat?s upgrade.

Hey, this is awesome...was each module dialed in pretty much the same? It sounded to me as if you were trying to get the same sound out of each...was this your intention?

FWIW, I thought both Plexis sounded the best, but that is obviously personal opinion.

Thanks for doing this!

nicely done!

good similiarities and slight differences. I liked the Sl+, Kh2, and plexi's best

I liked the tone of the SL+ followed closely by the Plexis.

I was wondering, how much gain are you using on the Ultra? It seems way too muddy to my ears - nothing like my Ultra XL.

You must ask Randall ;)
But seriously, no- I tried to get the "best" sound from each module. Remember most important fact - Same riff, same guitarist, same speaker this ALLWAYS will sound similar. In my opinion "what-who-speaker" make 80% of sound. And of course next point of view is personal taste of everybody, for example I don?t like scoopy overgained sound, because it never works good in complete mix etc, etc

I guess you just reamped for each clip

 No I recorded everything again and again 8)
two reasons:
- sound is inspiration for playing too
- for me is still faster then reamping

So Ultra is worst module which I have in hands by far. Absolutely useless. Everything bad, gain, tightness, EQ. And second is Modern, but it has nice solo sound, Ultra nothing :)
BUT!!! this is strictly personal meaning. My friend in total oposite, likes Ultra most of all my modules, and for him sounds good.

and yes, UltraXL is for me much better than Ultra.

and only for complete view, rest of samples
Modern - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7364717
Recto - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7333753
Grail - http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7333673

Thanks for making this. The only module I'm running right now is the 1086 until I can afford more. I'm glad I went with that after listening to this. After listening I could see the SL+ being a good middle ground between clean and hi-gain.

still want an ubersonic...

If anything, you've proven that there are a lot of diverse tastes in tone represented here.

I downloaded the clips into my Imesh player and all I had to do was click from one clip to the next to hear the differences. I heard the 1086 as having the best amount of tightness and clarity. Maybe we all hear things a little differently or the type of music you're accustomed to, plays into what we think sounds best?

There are so many variables. the 81's on my guitar sound great (to me) but my son's strat with humbuckers sounds like crap. Too bad there isn't some way to "look" at the tonal qualities of each sound on a graph, might be another way to assist us in understanding what it is in the tone we're all searching for.

Thanks for the comparrison.

Very cool

Your playing is nice and consistent from take to take

I do know what you mean about tone inspiring how you play

This is a really good comparison...not sure why the Ultra sounds so poor recorded...still love mine.

For these sample..I think I like Grail, 1086 and somewhat surprisingly the Plexi.

What I hear a lot in the clips is the speaker...you can hear the module differences generally....but there's a similar tone which is the speaker (and maybe mic?) influence...not to mention same player/guitar etc.

Nice job!

me too :) as I wrote...
and I?m not satisfied with XTC sample so much, but I dialed something and here it is.
Of course I used same IR speaker (MESA V30) and guitar RGX TT (SH4)

for everybody: These are only samples. Maybe a bit helping. But universal sample is impossible. Everytime is only showing of one riff, one guitarists, one speaker ;) Diferencies in other conditions can be bigger (or subtle), again "only samples".

I found the XTC to be a bit meh too. I really liked the SL+, KH-2, modPlexi, Grail, and Ultra XL clips though :D Definitely getting the Grail later for Petrucci-style leads :D

How are you getting all these great tones? My RECTO sounds terrible! As does the 1086 and my ULTRAXL. I couldnt get any of those tones ever out of my head.

whats your setup consist of?

Randall RM100, RECTO,ULTRA XL, and the 1086. Washburn Idol pro with a Duncan Custom Custom and V30 cab. RECTO AND 1086 ARE JUNK AND LACK CRUNKY GAIN. Sound amazing in the sound demos and just terrible otherwise.
