I suggest you change the pre-amp tube to high gain selected 12ax7c (Chinese r9)..that oughta help a lot with both issues. Pete might be able to mod these for more gain..but you may be better off using an external pedal.... BOSS SD-1 works wonders IMO

Click to expand... Recto guy's swear by the bloody murder. I'm going to beat the dead horse on this pedal. That pedal was specifically made for recto guy's needing that extra push and clarity.
