As a longtime fan of the Voodoo Amps "Dual Rec" Recto module, I decided to chart some bold new territory last night and actually record a clip of the thing. It's not the best-quality recording, having been done with the condenser mic of my Yamaha Pocketrack 2G, but I think (hope?) you can a decent idea of how aggressive this thing is.

Updated 3-27
New and (more) improved clip here:

I think the leads would sound good if you could play them faster

JK, the playing is awesome, the tone sounds good, but the volume of the amp is too quiet as I hear the guitar strings louder than the amp at points

Holy Crap, how the hell you play that stuff at 1:55? I think that's faster than Angelo

Thanks for the kind words. As for the volume, I think I erred in placing the recorder too close to my right hand and too far from the amp.

I'll see if I can record something a little louder--and faster--for you this week. :)

Good stuff. You have a nice heavy pick attack and great picking w solid synchronisation on the faster speeds. The picking stuff in the middle reminded me of Ronnie Le Tekro from TNT. Good chops, man.

So Trace modded it from a Recto for you? Which one of his mods is this? Or is it a custom job for you?
It sounds good, I especially liked the mids, punchy and pronounce but not too harsh.

It's the standard "Dual Rec" mod, which you can find here:

http://www.voodooamps.com/home/Modifications/AMPMODIFICATIONS/RandallMods/TreadplateModule/DualRecModTreadplate/tabid/453/Default.aspx

It's designed to sound like a Voodoo-modded Dual Rectifier head, and I dare say it hits the bullseye. Mine's based on a Recto module, but the Rectified and Treadplate units will work as well.

i love Trace's work, man. My EG5 modded by him is my favorite right now.
I'm thinking of talking to him about getting a mod that'll sound like a Diezel, that's gonna be a challege.

Still sorting out this whole recording thing, albeit fitfully. This clip's a bit better, I think, though you can still make out some picking noise in spots. Maybe next time I'll stand in an adjoining room.

At any rate, enjoy.

I guess that's cool if you like nothing but non stop speed picking....
mix it up a bit m8

Yes, definitely. I'm really just trying to capture the sound of the amp at the moment, not craft anything especially memorable.

Thanks for the feedback, though.

I just installed new pickups--a Dimarzio Liquifire (N) and an Anderson HN3+ (B)--in my Ibanez Artist, and I thought I'd try to dial in some Petrucci-esque tones using the Voodoo Dual Rec. I think I was partly successful with neck pickup, less so with the bridge. Again, this clip is just for tonal-evaluation purposes, not an attempt to win a Grammy.

Nice! With the "slow" speed and tone, On the bridge, IMO you were leaning more towards Zakk than Petrucci. Either way, great tone and playing.
Cheers

Thanks. The Anderson is probably a little too midrange intensive for Dream Theater rhythms, but the Liquifire is JP's neck tone in a box. Both are great pieces of gear for the money...as is the Dual Rec mod, of course.

6-3 Update: Added a quick clip of the Custom 3 doing some '80s-metal riffing.
