They may work but are no longer matched. :( Thus dont bias very close. I highly recomend replacing with a matched set and rebiased for best sound quality and better life expectancy.
Tung Sol 5881's or JJ 6L6's in one side and Svetlana EL34's on the other in mine. This offers a good contrast when switching from Marshall sounding tones to Fender or Mesa, ect. I had a matched set of JJ 6L6GC's and E34L's but I was wanting more contrasting sound between the channels. I've...
I have experienced a similar problem. Make sure you have a good set of tubes and the module is well seated. Turn the thumb screws in all the way to ensure good contact. IMO, the hand selected high gain JJ's ecc83s will offer thick mids and tons of sustain. Love them in the EG5. :twisted...
TS?s definitely have more gain than the comparable JJ. (ECC83/12AX7)
Although, the HIGH GAIN JJ?s (Few Percentage) of which have to be hand selected from a stock pile of tubes are closer to that of Tung Sol.
Hard to beat the gain of the TS's as with Chinese (Ruby, ect.), but can be slightly thin. I think the Tung Sols are very quiet, tight and sound prisine. Standard JJ's and EH's have Less gain but sound fuller, more round. Great all around tubes. But if you want high gain and superior SUSTAIN...

You don't bias preamp tubes as you do the power tubes. You should use current balanced tubes for phase inverter use. I believe these are the 2 outside tubes.
I also had a Marshall 9200 which is the 100w x2 version of the 9100. I had it modded to 5881's on one side and El34's on the other. It sounded great! Then I came into the M4 and rt250 which gave great versatility of midi switching between the Power tubes.. 5881-el34's. This was better suited...
